Summary: India has asked a high-ranking Canadian official to leave the country. They say Canada is getting involved in their country’s matters. This makes things even tenser between the two nations. They’re arguing about whether the Indian government might have had a part in the death of a Sikh activist.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded, saying they don’t want to make things worse. But he wants India to seriously consider what happened to Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Previously, Canada expelled India’s diplomat amid investigations of a Sikh activist to which the Indian Government is likely to be found guilty. India had earlier called the accusations about its government’s involvement “absurd.”
“We are doing that. We are not looking to provoke or escalate. We are simply laying out the facts as we understand them and we want to work with the government of India to lay everything clear and to ensure there are proper processes.”
Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
Trudeau spoke to reporters and emphasized that both India and its government should treat this matter with extreme seriousness. He said they aren’t trying to start trouble, they just want to understand everything clearly and follow the right steps.
Meanwhile, Canada has issued a new travel advisory for India, asking its citizens to exercise a “high degree of caution” while traveling to India.
